what birds see: combined ultraviolet and visible light

what humans see

ultraviolet

This photo of a green-winged macaw combines ultraviolet and visible light, allowing us to glimpse some of the hidden colors known only to birds. The beak and the face both appear almost white to the human eye, but in ultraviolet, the beak is darker. Therefore birds will perceive the beak and the face as distinctly different colors.
